Welcome!
Are you ready for a meaningful and impactful experience? Eager to explore the planning work that helps shape communities? Ready to roll up your sleeves and get hands-on with exciting, fast-moving projects? If your interests include writing, research, data analysis, mapping, and/or client and community engagement activities, we invite you to hop on board with Nelson\Nygaard’s internship program!
As a Nelson\Nygaard intern, you’ll be paired with a mentor who will accompany you on your journey, offering guidance and training support as you navigate through our extensive and unique project network. You’ll also join other interns for weekly information exchanges focused on topics such as transit planning and analysis; bike and pedestrian planning; business development; equity, diversity, and inclusion; and the basics of consulting. Your internship will culminate with a presentation of project-based and professional highlights from the summer.
What can you expect?
Internships are full-time (40 hours per week) and last approximately three months (roughly June through August).
The internship experience is cohort-based, so you'll move through the experience with a peer group. You'll start within a similar timeframe and participate in shared sessions and trainings.
As an intern, you'll have a lighter workload during the summer so that you can participate in learning opportunities and weekly intern learning sessions.
You'll be offered opportunities for in person and remote collaboration, with flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week.
You'll have access to a $250 stipend for setting up a home workstation (reimbursable with receipts).
Pay is based on education and experience. Undergraduate students, recent graduates, and graduate students can refer to the application for details on the pay scale.
What will you gain?
An amazing learning adventure. From formal, industry-specific coaching to direct, on-the-job activities, you’ll be immersed in a variety of opportunities that offer a unique and information-rich experience.
Real world application of what you’ve learned. Take your learning out of the classroom and into the community. Our project work will give you the opportunity to apply all those theories and skills in tangible ways.
Personal connections across disciplines and across the nation. Collaborate on a variety of projects with Nelson\Nygaard staff in communities throughout the U.S. Meet people and build relationships that will carry into your future work.
