Faced with a possible $2 million budget reduction, Wichita was considering cutting funding to bus service in Kansas’s largest city. A thorough analysis of the performance of the city’s fixed-route transit system was needed to make the case to save it.
Nelson\Nygaard developed several service scenarios, including a budget reduction scenario, cost-neutral scenario, and future growth scenario. The middle option was aimed at improving service efficiency by reducing unproductive service and reinvesting resources in several “transit emphasis” corridors.
As a result of our work, the City Council voted to not reduce transit funding but to instead allow Wichita Transit to implement our cost-neutral service scenario. In 2016, Wichita Transit implemented improved service scheduling and our redesigned passenger maps and brochures.
