Downtown Tiburon, a frequent tourist destination, is characterized by an extensive, yet mismanaged, parking supply. There is also a lack of coordinated signs, inadequate bicycle and pedestrian connections, and a general overreliance on automobiles.
Nelson\Nygaard completed a comprehensive analysis of existing movements of cars, people and bikes, as well as parking supply, availability, and turnover. We developed a suite of circulation and parking improvements to better manage the parking supply, improve multimodal access, and implement various complete streets policies, particularly along Tiburon Boulevard, the state highway that bisects downtown. Strategies included new roundabouts, back-in angled parking, widened sidewalks, and buffered bicycle lanes.
A core recommendation was to initiate negotiations with Caltrans to reclaim jurisdiction of Tiburon Boulevard, which would allow the Town to more easily make decisions about future uses of the roadway.
