Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is a new public transit service that connects many of the cities and towns within the counties of Marin and Sonoma. In order to improve multimodal access and first/last-mile connections, Nelson\Nygaard developed bicycle parking investment strategies at each rail station serving SMART.
The SMART Stations Bicycle Parking Investment Plan provides a framework for defining bicycle parking supply at the outset of rail services and a flexible monitoring approach to identify evolving bike parking needs to meet shifts in demand after rail services have been in place and ridership patterns are established. Project recommendations were informed by background analysis, existing conditions, technical review, and best practices, and the process was built around ongoing stakeholder feedback.
The final plan includes station-specific recommendations to address unique local demands and site-specific constraints. The plan also provides investment and evaluation recommendations, including a proposed timeline, priorities for project implementation, potential funding sources, partnership opportunities, and evaluation methods.
