The City of Santa Monica’s existing family of plans documents street designations and priorities citywide, including modal priorities, physical conditions, and adjacent land uses. Putting these priorities into practice has been challenging due to the many competing interests and priorities among the public as well as City departments.
Nelson\Nygaard is assisting the City with the development of a Complete Streets policy focusing on identifying short- and long-term steps toward integrating complete streets into the everyday decision-making process and performance measures that track progress. When the work is complete, we will update the Bike Action Plan with a protected bikeway strategy, including a comprehensive evaluation of bicycle corridor demand, gaps in the high-comfort network, crash analysis, and conflict mapping. The result will be priority actions to implement new protected bikeways.
