Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA), the largest regional transit authority in Massachusetts, provides service to 24 communities and carries over 10 million passengers per year. PVTA had not conducted a full review of its services in more than a decade, and they wanted to ensure that the service matched local need and was operating as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Nelson\Nygaard conducted a comprehensive analysis of PVTA’s services to determine strategies to grow ridership. We worked closely with PVTA staff to develop two service improvement scenarios – one that made minor changes to the existing system and a second that suggested more extensive changes. We brought the options to the community to get their input and, overwhelmingly, they supported the more dramatic service changes. The final recommendations called for a variety of improvements including the introduction of cross-town routes, expansion of the express route network, reduced route deviations, and expansion of the community circulator network.
