Bicycle Boulevards prioritize convenient and safe bicycle travel using traffic calming strategies, wayfinding signage, and other measures. This study presented an opportunity to design a new bicycle boulevard along a street that serves as an important connection for people bicycling to and through the City of Mountain View.
Nelson\Nygaard conducted an existing conditions review of the corridor to assess existing striping, traffic counts and intersection controls. Based on existing conditions, Nelson\Nygaard drafted a preliminary bicycle boulevard design concept to prioritize bicycle travel along the corridor. The preliminary design includes traffic calming elements and traffic diversion to reduce cut-through traffic and provide a more welcoming environment for people of all ages and bicycling abilities. We conducted a preliminary high-level analysis of the pros and cons of the design concept. This analysis includes bicycle and pedestrian safety and amenity, traffic flow, parking loss, and conceptual cost estimates.
