Honolulu has a major redevelopment opportunity in the Kaka`ako neighborhood, which lies between downtown, the ocean, and Honolulu’s largest retail center—Ala Moana. The neighborhood will soon be served by three new light rail stations and is expected to quickly shift from an auto-oriented warehouse and back office district into an urban, multi-use place.
After significant outreach, Nelson\Nygaard developed a plan to capture many local trips with a mix of residential, employment and community-serving destinations, while ensuring high quality rapid transit station access for regional trips. The accompanying Complete Streets strategy included major improvements in the pedestrian realm, traffic calming, and road dieting, while prioritizing transit connectivity and access.
Nelson\Nygaard designed an overlay for the district to change local zoning and pave the way for a Complete Streets approach to a walkable and transit-oriented community.
