The Destination Medical Center (DMC) Development Plan is a 20-year $1.2 billion master plan and transportation investment strategy developed for the DMC Economic Development Agency. Nelson\Nygaard’s primary task was to develop strategies that create a great place connected to a lively Zumbro River waterfront, catalyze over $5 billion in economic development, and address the unprecedented existing and future demand for employee access to the Mayo Clinic. During this process, Nelson\Nygaard developed strategies and detailed implementation plans for integrated street investments and transit access, including a streetcar circulator that would provide last mile connections from remote parking structures and an intermodal transit center.
Demand for access and parking in Rochester is unparalleled, exhibiting an employment draw greater than New York City, San Francisco, and Washington DC when comparing percent of region employed in the CBD. We developed a creative district shared parking solution that balances access between employees and revenue generating visitors. Nelson\Nygaard also developed active transportation principles and associated investments for downtown Rochester including one of the plan’s banner investments—an urban multi-use trail facility and placemaking project called the City Loop.
