For more than three years, the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization pursued a regional plan for sustainable development of Greater Des Moines. Residents and local leaders of seventeen communities united to identify aspirations for the region, explore potential scenarios, and set a direction for sustainable future development.
Nelson\Nygaard led the transportation element of The Tomorrow Plan for the 542-square mile area in central Iowa. The project began with intense public outreach efforts that helped identify the region’s priorities, which consistently echoed that area residents wanted to “walk, bike, or take transit to important destinations.”
This became Nelson\Nygaard’s guidance and inspired recommendations including: developing a system of walkable employment and residential nodes, connected to one another by multimodal corridors; enhancing the region’s freight network to support goods movement and economic development; and implementing regionwide Transportation Demand Management programs to balance travel across all modes and times of day.
