The County Connection transit system serves residents in central Contra Costa County, California. Some of its routes suffered from the low ridership and productivity that’s typically found in suburban public transit systems throughout the United States.
Nelson\Nygaard worked with the agency to create more efficient transit services. One of the proposed improvements involved Route 5, one of the system’s least productive routes. Nelson Nygaard recommended a restructuring of the route to provide faster, more direct, and more reliable service connecting the southern part of downtown Walnut Creek with the Walnut Creek BART station.
The restructured service was implemented in 2015. Within less than a year, weekday ridership on the route increased from an average of 75 daily passengers to an average of 531, a more than 600 percent rise. Productivity during the same time period increased from 7.5 passengers per hour to over 28 passengers per hour, an increase of just under 400%.
