Nelson\Nygaard developed a master plan for Chico to build a network of bikeways that appeals to people of all ages and abilities, creating a stronger community and helping businesses thrive. Community issues that affect the current bicycling environment include personal safety concerns, comfort of people on bicycles using the current infrastructure, and funding availability. This plan will serve to continue and execute the vision for bicycling in the community that was originally set forth in its General Plan.
The principal project outcome will be a targeted and strategic cost-constrained project list. The project team developed network and facility recommendations based on existing conditions work. The attractive and accessible documentation tells the story of residents’ support for investments, current bicycle levels of traffic stress, and relative bicycling demand. Project outreach tasks included conducting community outreach in partnership with local stakeholder and advocacy organizations and conducting a map-based on-line survey. These outreach events included interactive games to raise awareness of the cost of implementing comfortable facilities.
