Nelson\Nygaard recently completed a bus stop study for Metro, located in Kalamazoo, MI. Goals of the study included improving rider experience, operational safety and on-time performance. The project team analyzed bus stop usage, spacing, placement, amenities, and pedestrian access.
Findings were incorporated into the Kalamazoo Area Bus Stop Action Plan, which recommends removal, relocation or installation of approximately 300 stops, reducing the total number of stops in the system by 14%. The plan also recommends installing improved signage, ADA compliant concrete pads at all stops, additional shelters at high ridership stops and a transit hub. The Transit Authority Board of Directors approved the plan in October and will implement recommendations over the next five years.
The final report, which was recently released to the public, includes recommendations for improvements that will help make transit throughout Kalamazoo county faster, more reliable, and more efficient. Project work led by James Gamez, Peter Soderberg, Dan Sommerville, Michael Carraher, and Drew Meisel!
