The Big Blue Bus Expo Integration Study won the 2018 Implementation Award from the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Planning Association, granted to a planning endeavor that displays a substantial project accomplishing optimistic changes as a result of outstanding planning work in the Los Angeles region. With the arrival of the Expo Line, a light rail line that was extended to Downtown Santa Monica in 2016, the time was right for a comprehensive look at transit in Santa Monica, including recommendations to reconfigure Big Blue Bus service in response to the Expo line. This work included a major outreach component, an important step in a politically engaged community such as Santa Monica. The work also took place against the backdrop of an aggressive City goal, developed by Nelson\Nygaard through a separate study, of accommodating new development with no net growth in afternoon and evening peak traffic through 2030. Ed King, Director of Transit Services said of the project, “The high levels of customer engagement and employee participation were integral in re-designing and re-envisioning the future of our bus system.”
