Bicyclists not dwelling properly over the inductive loop detector will not trigger a green light and won’t get to go until a motorist approaches or a pedestrian pushes a button. The lack of a green signal causes delay and frustration, which is one of many reasons leading to risky red light running behavior. In the March 2017 issue of ITE Journal, Jesse Boudart and his co-authors explore better symbols and practices to increase bike riders’ comprehensive at traffic signals.
