San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency – San Francisco, CA

San Francisco Taxi Study

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which regulates taxi service for the City of San Francisco, needed to assess issues associated with credit card processing fees, back-seat passenger information monitors (PIM), and 100% collection of electronic data.

Nelson\Nygaard interviewed the taxi services staff, taxi company representatives, drivers, and other stakeholders to better understand the issues. Among other findings, an analysis of data confirmed that tip amounts for credit card trips were higher than cash tips, especially for shorter trips, as a result of PIM peer-programmed prompts.

This project culminated in nine recommendations, which were adopted by the SFMTA Board.
