Chicago Complete Streets

The City of Chicago is committed to building Complete Streets to ensure that everyone – pedestrians, transit users, bicyclists and motorists – can travel safely and comfortably along and across a street.

Nelson\Nygaard, assisted by Farr Associates and the Active Transportation Alliance, led the development of street design guidelines, policies and protocols for Chicago. To ensure that elements would be championed internally by staff, Nelson\Nygaard conducted a series of stakeholder interviews, inter-agency workshops and discussions, policy directives, working groups, and training sessions.

The final guide, Chicago Complete Streets, includes a variety of critical street design elements including project development process, street and building typology, level of service, design vehicle, speed limits, turns on red, legal status, and crash mapping.
