The Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association honored the Downtown Austin Parking Strategy with a 2017 Project Planning Award. The plan is a thorough and complete investigation that not only looks at today’s parking patterns but those expected with rapid development. The consultant team, led by Nelson\Nygaard with Asakura Robinson Company, DIXON Resources Unlimited, and McCann Adams Studio, worked with the Downtown Austin Alliance and grounded the plan in rigorous analysis and practical lessons learned from successful cities. The final recommendations include key strategies such as pricing Austin’s most valuable spaces on-street more appropriately and working to open restricted, but underutilized private parking to the public. The plan is also a starting point for new approaches to zoning and adaptability for changing mobility trends and emerging technology.
