The Waterfront Concept Design won the 2013 National Planning Achievement Award for Urban Design from the American Planning Association. The plan for Seattle’s Central Waterfront gives a roadmap for reconnecting central Seattle to Elliott Bay. Nelson\Nygaard led the design of the bikeway, a new intermodal transit center, a new waterfront connector, and hillclimb assists.

Crystal City Redevelopment earned the Achievement Award
The Crystal City redevelopment project was awarded the 2013 National Planning Achievement Award for Innovation in Economic Planning and Development by the American Planning Association. The Crystal City Sector Plan, passed in 2010 by the Arlington County Board in Virginia, allows the use of economic analysis for planning purposes, specifically targeting the study of demolishing and replacing major commercial buildings. Nelson\Nygaard reviewed and analyzed travel demand and developed transportation options and conceptual improvements for transit (bus and metro), pedestrians, bicyclists, parking, and streetscape design.
